The Costa de Almeria is unlike the other costas—and that is exactly what makes it so special. There is something raw and untouched about this 135-mile-long stretch of coastline, where sandy beaches meet rugged desert, and there are plenty of quiet spots away from the crowds. Playa de los Muertos, despite its name (Beach of the Dead), is a slice of paradise.

The Tabernas Desert is just up the road—a landscape literally straight out of a Spaghetti Western (movies were made there). Dry, vast, and utterly cinematic, horseback riding is a good way to explore this photogenic area. Another good place to have a camera handy is the Cabo de Gata (Cape of the Cat) Nijar Natural Park. Protected in 2000 for its wetland birds rather than native felines, it is wild in the best way possible. There are dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and little fishing villages where time slows down.

Then there is Almeria itself—a city that does not try too hard but still wins people over. Wander through the Alcazaba, one of Spain’s large Moorish fortresses, with views stretching all the way to the sea. Then find a tucked-away tapas bar and sip a cold cerveza. Costa de Almería is not loud or flashy, but that is why you will love it. It has a quiet kind of magic, the kind that stays with you long after you have left.
