Moving northeast up the coast of southeastern Spain, the province of Murcia, once an independent kingdom, meets the Mediterranean Sea. Its 155 miles of shores are called calida, warm, for its 77 degrees F summer water temperatures. Like in California, the sun may be warm, but Spanish waters can be chilly in some areas, depending upon prevailing currents, which keep Murcia’s micro-climate dry as well. Many prefer Murcia’s aridness to Costa Blanca’s humidity.

Another good thing is that this fact is relatively unknown to tourists and house-hunters, so it is not over-developed and prices are still reasonable. The densest development is along the edges of the Mar Menor, a shallow saltwater lagoon popular for kayaking and with families with small children. Many PGA courses are in this area at various resorts, along with sailing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and kite and wind surfing. The best areas for diving are Cabo de Palos and the underwater caves between Cartagena and La Azohía.
